Top Tips for: Tiling A Kitchen

Share

Last month we started our “Top Tips for” series of blog posts, starting with the “Tiling A Bathroom” blog. This month we will be covering our top tips for tiling a kitchen.

Use Light Colours

It’s no secret that a kitchen can be a tricky room to keep feeling light and spacious. There are many options to improve the lighting of your room, one of which is choosing lighter coloured tiles. Doing this will help light bounce around the room, keeping it well lit in potentially darker areas, therefore giving your room a more spacious feel.

The 10 Percent Rule

As mentioned in our previous blog post (Top Tips for Tiling A Bathroom), the 10 per cent rule also applies to tiling a kitchen. Ordering 10% extra tiles (or 15% for large format tiles) on top of the amount you have calculated to need, helps pre-empt problems like cracking a tile and other issues such as a potential miscalculation during the ordering stage.

Use A Smaller Format Tile

Although this is not necessary, we recommend using a smaller-format tile in a kitchen for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it is much easier to fit tiles around cupboards, plug sockets and other appliances. If using large tiles, it becomes more difficult to cut to size.

Choose your Grout

When installing tiles in a kitchen, it’s easy to overlook the importance of choosing the correct grout. We would recommend using an anti-bacterial grout such as BAL Micromax, to prevent any bacteria buildup around your cooking and food preparation areas.

As well as this, it’s crucial to use a grout sealer, to keep the grout clean and protect it from staining. We would recommend using a sealer such as Lithofin Grout Protector to ensure the longevity of your installation.

Choose Patterned Or Shaped Tiles

When wanting to add some character to your kitchen, having a feature wall or using some patterned or shaped tiles is a fantastic choice. There are many ranges and colours of tiles for both walls and floors to fit the style you wish to achieve. For a contemporary look using an interesting shape choose the superb lozenge-shaped Rockingham range.
