Slip-resistant matt floor tiles for a family home

Matt floor tiles are a practical choice for modern homes, particularly those with children or pets, as they offer the best of both worlds: a sophisticated look with a broad range of styles, whilst being more “grippy” or slip-resistant than glossy floor tiles.

Matt floor tiles are a low-maintenance choice as they’re great at hiding scuffs and dirt that come part and parcel with a busy family home, and they don’t require constant buffing to keep them looking pristine.

Having a non-reflective surface also means that matt floor tiles absorb light, so they can help to create a cosy atmosphere in your kitchen, dining room, conservatory or living room.

Looking beyond the safety element of being slip-resistant, matt floor tiles are the best choice for floors for a number of reasons:

  • Uniform appearance – unlike glossy tiles, the more abrasive surface of matt floor tiles means they’ll look consistent as they’ll distribute light better across the floor
  • Moisture absorption – due to not being glossy, they’re better in areas that are prone to getting wet, like bathrooms, kitchens and hallways
  • A more natural look – If you’re going for natural effect tiles like marble or stone, matt floor tiles look less artificial than glossy floor tiles

  • Should I choose glossy or matt floor tiles?

Really, it’s entirely up to you, as the style you’re going for may only be available as either glossy or matt floor tiles. There are no hard and fast rules, but it’s worth bearing in mind that matt floor tiles are likely better suited to floors as they’re more slip-resistant and hide scuffs better.

    Q
  • What colour grout works best with matt floor tiles?

It depends on your style choice entirely. If you want to go for a seamless look, we would recommend choosing grout that matches your matt floor tiles as closely as possible, whereas if you are going for a more intricate pattern where you want each individual tile to stand out, you can go lighter or darker.

    Q
  • Are matt floor tiles slippery when wet?

Whilst there are no ceramic or porcelain tiles that are completely slip proof, matt floor tiles are more grippy and therefore provide a greater level of slip resistance. It’s worth noting that you should pay attention to the R Rating when looking at individual tiles, as the higher the R Rating, the higher the level of slip resistance.

    Q
  • Do matt floor tiles scratch easily?

Quite the opposite. Matt floor tiles are not only more scratch resistant, but they’re better than glossy floor tiles at hiding minor scratches.
