As you know, tiled walls and floors can transform your living areas like your kitchen and dining room into something visually stunning. They create the perfect areas for you to relax in and help make your home one to be proud of.

However, what if you’ve got some old wooden flooring like traditional floorboards or green chipboard slabs? What if you want to lay some tiles? What do you do then?

Well, while some myths exist about laying floor tiles onto wood, the good news is you can do it if you’re prepared. That’s why, here are Tile & Stone Gallery, we have prepared this blog to help guide you through it. In the end, you’ll be able to have a floor like the one below which is actually a wood effect porcelain tile.

Preparation is Key

If you hadn’t realised by now, the problem with chipboards and floorboards is that they are not designed to be tiled on. They can move and flex when walked on, which causes cracking and eventually detaches the tile. Not to mention, they can react badly to moisture causing the subfloor to expand and flake apart. As you would imagine, excessive flexing causes the adhesive to come free, causing the tiles to crack. You don’t want to lay your tiles, only having to rip them all up because the base isn’t correctly prepared?

Naturally, there are some costs with preventing this but it will save you money and extra work in the future. You want your tiled floor to last and look good for many years as it should.

That’s why, there’s nothing more important in laying tiles onto wooden floor than preparation. So, let’s make sure you do it correctly the first time which will avoid any hassle further down the line!
